Imam/ Religious Director

Job Description

The Islamic Center of Hunterdon County is a welcoming, growing, and vibrant religious organization established on prayer and Islamic values. ICHC provides support, services, and education to Muslims and non-Muslims in the community.

The Islamic Center of Hunterdon County (ICHC) seeks an energetic, personable, inspiring, and articulate Sunni Imam/Religious Director for a community consisting of more than 200 families.

This critical role should provide religious and spiritual guidance to the diverse, multi-ethnic, multilingual, and multi-generational Muslim community of Hunterdon County. This will be done through various programs and activities in compliance with the Quran and Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

​He should establish a unified Muslim community and promote understanding and harmony between the Muslim and larger Hunterdon County non-Muslim community.

Core Roles and Responsibilities

1. Religious Responsibilities
  • Leads most daily prayers (at least six days per week)
  • Delivers/coordinates Friday khutbahs/prayers
  • Delivers/coordinates Eid khutbahs/prayers
  • Conducts halaqas, classes in tajweed, fiqh, tafseer, aqeedah
  • Advisor to the Weekend Islamic school for its Salah and Qur’anic Literacy curriculum

2. Civic Responsibilities and Community Engagement
  • Available at regular, scheduled time at the Masjid for members of the community who seek counsel and guidance, and available through phone and email
  • Engages with all persons and organizations, Muslim, and non-Muslim, in a manner that reflects positively on the Masjid and the Muslim Community
  • Understands the perspectives and challenges (e.g., of social issues) of Muslims in America and helps guide them
  • Demonstrates empathy and is a confidant for youth and community members while offering a safe space to seek guidance
  • Promotes and participates in youth-focused activities and interactive programs
  • Conducts religiously related events such as nikkah, funeral services/janaza, etc.
  • Represents the masjid via interactions with local schools, interfaith, and local media, as needed
  • Leads outreach and da'wah activities for both Muslims and people of other faiths
  • Assists and supports programs for new Muslims/reverts
3. Administrative Responsibilities
  • Works with the Board on religious and Masjid-related matters

Required Qualifications
  • Must hold the beliefs of the Sunni school of thought
  • Solid understanding of Qur’an, Sunnah, Hadith, Aqeedah, Fiqh, and Sharia
  • Has memorized a large portion of the Qur'an
  • Pleasant and commanding Qur'anic Recitation, following tajweed rules
  • Excellent communication skills with fluency in English
  • Should possess strong knowledge of the Arabic language
  • Degree(s) or diploma(s) in religious studies and Qur'anic Tajweed
  • Good manners and etiquette
  • Demonstrates empathy, effectively engages with and can be a confidant to the youth and community members
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident
